Keeping Memory Alive
August 30, 2019 - Congratulations are in order for our Munich Member Penelope Poetis, who appeared as a speaker in the seminar "Keeping memory alive - actively defending the rule of law - strengthening democracy" at the Sommerakademie der Begabten-förderungswerke under the patronage of German Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Being invited by the Hanns-Seidel-Foundation, Penelope discussed with the students at the Heidelberg University parallels in anti-Semitic statements in the pre and early phase of the Third Reich and today’s political discourse.
Particular attention was paid to the role of Donald Trump in the growing anti-Semitism in the USA, as well as the role of the AfD and other right-wing parties, which have reopened the political discourse to abuse and disparagement. Penelope’s seminars are based on her book Offenen Auges, which in our current political and social context, is more up to date than ever.
